Sayjel Vijay Patel is a Canadian architect, software designer, and innovator in the field of data-driven material design. He is a Founding Assistant Professor at the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI), the first design university to open in the UAE. At DIDI, he is currently spearheading the development an experimental design studio and research lab. Prior to joining DIDI, Sayjel was a Principal Investigator with the SUTD Digital Manufacturing and Design Centre (DManD) in Singapore, where he pioneered 3-D Sampling -- a breakthrough method for synthesizing new materials using image processing techniques to manipulate 3D scanned data-sets. Sayjel received his Architectural training from several international architectural firms, including Coop Himmelb(l)au in Vienna, Gensler in Los Angeles and Kohn Pedersen Fox in New York.
Sayjel is the co-founder and coordinator of CodeKitchen -- a teaching and learning lab designed to eliminate the disciplinary silos that exist between different scientific fields and the applied arts. Based on the model of constructivism, CodeKitchen works with world-leading researchers and industry sponsors to produce inclusive events to allow anyone to engage with the frontiers of technology and research.
Sayjel was born in 1986 in Canada. He received Master of Architecture from the MIT School of Architecture and Planning and a Bachelor of Architectural Studies with Distinction from the University of Waterloo.
